Google’s Android does better than expected

 

The HTC G1 phone with Google’s Android software is selling better than expected with sales figures expected to touch the 1 million mark in the fourth quarter of 2008. That is a 40% increase over the 600,000 units estimated by HTC. The G1 is serviced by AT&T. Android is the first mobile software from Google and also the first open source mobile software. On seeing the response for Android and G1 other service providers like AT&T, Sprint and Verizon are planning to come out with their own cell phone plans for Android.

For many of us worried about the safety of using credit cards for online purchases, Visa Europe has come out with a new credit card with a keypad and digital number display that ensures that the card owner has control over the usage of the card. This new card looks like any other normal credit card with the card number and magnetic strip for swiping. Instead of a security code number, the card users are given a PIN number which they will type using the keypad. A one-time use security code will be displayed, using which the user can make online transactions.

A lot of banks have joined Visa in its pilot study for the new credit card and we have to wait and see which issuer comes out with a credit card offer for this new high-on-security credit card. In the second quarter of 2008, US mobile subscribers sent and received an average of 357 text messages per month as against making and receiving 204 phone calls a month, the survey adds.

The recent increase in texting could be related to the recent financial crisis that has left lesser money for the average American to spend. Because in most cellphone plans  texting works out much cheaper than making calls and a few plans have unlimited texting option. In fact, teenagers between the age of 13-17 text the most with an average of 1,742 messages sent and received a month, the survey adds. Thankfully there are many websites that compare cell phone plans and help in choosing the best cell phone plans.

Flickr on iPhone now

Photo sharing on your iPhone has become easier now. Popular favorite photo-sharing software Flickr is now available on iPhones. Flickr recently pulled the wraps on its iPhone plans with the launch of an iPhone optimized version of its site. The new iPhone optimized version is a tweak of Flickr’s application for mobile phones, www.m.flickr.com. Basic tools for online photo sharing like view, search are available in the mobile version. However, the edit feature is missing here. Considering that mobile phone screens are too small to edit pictures, I guess the feature wouldn’t be missed much.  

Even the Slideshow and Flash related features are missing, since iPhone 3G still does not support Flash player.
